Things look substantially different now, do they not? I normally use a higher screen resolution, but out of curiosity I resized the desktop to 800x600 and then to 640x480 to have a look at my page. What I discovered is that I had in fact committed some kind of vile web sin: my archaic table-heavy fake-up from earlier had neglected all web users with lower-res displays, and practically all disabled users, and was generally an offense to good e-taste. Anyone who viewed my page with a lower resolution, as those few who have visited my site under these circumstances have known longer than I, was at serious risk of both retinal damage and carpal tunnel in their scrolling arm.

Enter the wonder of cascading style sheets, about which I know practically nothing. I now know very slightly more than I did before discovering that my site looked like it had been designed by a hydrocephalic baboon. Very slightly more, but at least now practically anyone who stops by ye olde Mirabile Visu will be greeted with a more or less enjoyable experience. I'm aware that it's still not the exemplar of brilliant web coding, but then, I am not and have no aspirations to being an exemplar of brilliant webmastery. At least now the layout and construction are somewhat less self-defeating. Now, content on the other hand...

Overheard in the coffee shop this afternoon:

"Now they make the chainmail out of plastic... can you imagine how heavy it would be if it were made of METAL?"

I don't know what to make of this either. I did, however, realize that if I didn't quickly move away a chair or two, I was likely to succumb to some bizarre contagious geek-flu and begin maundering on about percentile-dice.
